Abstract

For people with ophthalmic disorders, depression is a very common problem. In Ethiopia, no study assessed the severity and related depression factors among ophthalmic patients. The research thus aimed at assessing the prevalence and factors associated depression in people with eye disease. From March 1–30, 2019, the institution-based cross-sectional study layout was conducted among 281 participants at the Mekelle Quiha General Ophthalmic Hospital. Data were collected using the Depression Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). We used sampling methods that were convenient. Data were entered in Epidata 3.1 and exported for review to the Social Science Statistical Package (SPSS) version 20. Frequency, percentages, mean, standard deviation, bivariate and multivariable logistical regression techniques were used at a confidence interval of 95 percent. Statistical significance at p-value of < 0.05 was declared. The prevalence of depression in our study found to be 30.6% among respondents. A multivariable logistic regression analysis indicated that being female (AOR=3.21 95% CI: (1.72, 5.98), being widowed (AOR=6.27, 95% CI: (1.18, 33.27), unemployed respondent (AOR=3.81, 95% CI: (1.86, 8.16) and those respondents who living alone (AOR=2.52, 95% CI: (1.22, 5.19) were identified risk factors of depression. Over all depression is a common problem in ophthalmic patients. Sex, marital status, unemployed and living alone were found to be important factors associated with depression among ophthalmic patients.
