Descriptive Research Study to Assess the Knowledge of Mental Illness and its Prevention among People Residing in Selected Areas of Shrirampur

Abstract


Introduction: Mental disorder is a syndrome characterized by the clinical significant disturbance in the cognition, emotion regulation or behavior that reflects a dysfunction in the developmental processes underlying mental functioning psychological and biological Method And Material: A descriptive study was carried out to the ‘A study to assess the level knowledge of common people regarding mental illness and its prevention residing at selected areas  Data was collected from selected forty samples who by simple random sampling method and who met the inclusion criteria. The self prepared and content validated structured questionnaire was used for the data collection. Significant findings of research in relation to socio-demographic characteristics of sample were as follows: Result: Majority 52.5%% of samples were females and remaining 47.5% were males. 57.5% of samples were from age group of 20 to 30 years, 20% of samples were from 31-40yrs and 22.5% were 41-50yrs. 40% of samples were Christian and 20% were Hindu and only 20% were Muslim & other (20%) sample were from religions. 55% of samples were married and 35% were single and only 10% were divorced. 12.5% of samples were post graduate &above and 47.5% samples had secondary school education and 40% samples had primary school education. Residential status of samples is about 100% of them resides in urban areas, Majority of (70%) samples were staying in nuclear family, 20% samples were staying in joint family and 10% samples were staying in extended families. 55% of samples were supported by family, 35% samples were getting support from peer group and 10% samples had support from parents. Summary: According structured questionnaire Researchers found that 32.5% samples having average knowledge, 55% samples having good knowledge and 12.5% samples having very good knowledge regarding mental illness and its prevention. Conclusion: Researchers conclude that common peoples residing at selected areas of Shrirampur are having average level of knowledge regarding mental illness and its prevention the health professional must take effort to gain their knowledge.
