Functional Outcomes of an Individual with Partial Glossectomy: A Case Report

Girish K S, Divya V., Vinod D.

Abstract

Individuals with Glossectomy experience life-altering deficits resulting in a severe speech and swallowing problems that significantly impact their quality of life (QoL). It is crucial to document changes in speech subsystems, swallowing, and QoL in individuals with glossectomy. This knowledge is often used for rehabilitation, employment, participation in the community, and to inform the role of family members in the betterment of the patient. To date, very few studies have discussed these in detail. Hence, the present study highlights the nature of speech impairment, swallowing difficulties, and QoL in a Kannada-speaking partial glossectomy patient. Speech evaluation indicated the presence of imprecise consonants, distorted vowels, compensatory articulation errors, hoarseness, short phrases, mono-pitch, mono-loudness, and poor speech intelligibility. Also, the swallowing assessment revealed a moderate to severe degree of dysphagia.
