Abstract

Ethiopia is the second most populous nation in Africa. Its population has increased nearly seven times from 11.8 million at the beginning of the 20th century to about 80 million today. Where, only 27% in reproductive age groups are currently using modern contraceptive and number of factors could affect for effective use of modern contraception. But, still evidence showed that, as there is high maternal mortality and unwanted pregnancy. However, there were few studies that have documented on modern contraceptive utilization and factors associated in ‘Tigray region particularly in Mekelle city’. Therefore, by adopting strategies to address factors affecting contraceptive utilization, the program will have greater impact to improve contraceptives utilization. A community based cross-sectional study was employed among married women and the data was collected from March 12–19th 2013, using interview type questionnaire. A total of 561 married women were selected for the study from the three selected sub cities using a multi-stage sampling technique. The collected data was entered, cleaned and analyzed using SPSS version 20.0. Logistic regression model was used to determine prediction levels of independent variables to the outcome variables and a variable having P< 0.05 was considered as statistically significant variable in both bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis.  A total of 561 married women were included in the study and making a response rate of 99.6%. The mean age of the respondents was 31.8 (± 7.16). Two hundred forty seven 247 (44.3 %) of the respondents were currently using of modern contraceptives .Three hundred seventeen (59.8%) of the respondents had inadequate knowledge on modern contraceptive methods. Three hundred eighteen (57.1%) of the respondents had supportive attitude towards modern contraceptives. Muslim followers [AOR= 2.8, 95% CI (1.06, 7.42)], educational status of women [AOR= 0.05, 95% CI (0.01, 0.30)], possessing of television[AOR=2.59(1.01, 6.63)], age at first pregnancy [AOR= 3.31(1.03, 10.63)], experience of abortion[AOR=0.34(0.17, 0.66)] and decision made on use of modern contraceptives [AOR= 0.04(0.01, 0.13)] were the factors that lead for married women to use modern contraceptive methods. There exists inadequate knowledge on utilization of modern contraceptive. Most of the participants had supportive attitude towards utilization. So, strengthening the current family planning education program and further revising strategies for increment of modern contraceptive in married women should be considered.
