Istuti Gupta, Sandeep Sirohi, Mohammad Munawar Tappa, Surya Prakash DV

Abstract

Breast Fibroadenomas are the most common type of benign breast lumps found mainly in adolescent women. These are unilateral, smooth, demarcated, rubbery, mobile, and painless masses. They are believed to be formed by the influence of changes in the female reproductive hormone, estrogen and sometimes the combination of both estrogen and progesterone which mainly occurs at the time of puberty. Fibroadenomas are mostly found in women till the age of 35 and diminish after menopause. They are also influenced by the Body Mass Index (BMI) of an individual and have more chances of occurrence in the ones with a strong medical history of breast lesions or tumors. These are of various types depending on their number, size, texture, etc. Many diagnostic techniques like Mammogram, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Pathological Analysis, etc. are used for their evaluation and assessment. Several methods of intervention have been identified and practiced including Surgical Excision, Minimally Invasive Techniques and Ablative Procedures depending on the type of fibroadenoma and some other factors. These benign lumps do not possess any risk of breast carcinoma, however, it has been suggested in several articles that Fibroadenomas might increase the risk of breast cancer in some cases.
