Abstract

Haemoglobin is a protein in the red blood cells that carry oxygen. Hb evaluation is a fast, valid and trustworthy method to detect blood deficiency. Direct cyanmethemoglobin has been the gold standard method for Hb estimation but there are many other methods available as well, for example, haemoglobin colour scale, Sahli method, Lovibond-Drabkin method, Tallqvist technique, copper sulphate method, HemoCue, automated haematology analysers and complete blood count to name a few. Each method has its own benefits and disadvantages. Haemoglobin electrophoresis is another cost- effective and user friendly method to analyse Hb. Several hemoglobinopathies are known that are serious health hazards to human kind like anaemia or thalassemia. Cancer patients frequently experience anaemia as a recognized complication. It is either caused by the tumour itself or by the chemotherapy regimen used. The assessment and monitoring of Hb concentration in cancer patients is an important part of cancer management. The current review compiles studies done in the analysis of Hb with special reference to cancer.
