Pyrethroid Mediated Some Macromolecular and Biochemical Changes in Freshwater Teleost

Abstract

In present investigation, a freshwater fish Channa punctatus was exposed for 21 days to synthetic pyrethroid malathion at sublethal concentrations of 0.007mg L−1 and 0.093 mg L−1 that represented 10% of the 96 h LC50 of the pesticide for this fish. Tissue samples were collected at the end of the experiment and analyzed to determine oxidant/antioxidants status (catalase, LDH, DNA content, protein content, cortisol, etc.) of the fish. Enzyme activities were found to be increased in liver, muscle, kidney and gill tissues. When compared with those of control fish, significant depletion of protein and cortisol content was observed in liver, and that of protein in muscle, kidney, gill tissues of fish treated with pesticide at their higher concentrations. The results revealed a significant increase in the catalase, LDH and protein was significant (p<0.05) only in fish muscle treated with malathion. Antioxidant enzymes level enhances oxidative stress at subcellular level including lipid peroxidation, oxidative damage and lesser physiological adaptation in pyrethroid treated fish.
