Reviewing the Role of Exercise as a Key to Prevention of Chronic Diseases from the Unani Perspective
Abstract
Chronic diseases are the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. Lack of riyazat is a core cause of most chronic diseases. The body rapidly mal-adjusts to insufficient physical activity, and if continued, results in significant waning in both total and quality years of life. In Unani system of medicine, riyazat is a very crucial and constructive tool for maintaining the health. Moreover, many crucial recommendations of riyazat have been described by Greek physicians. According to Hippocrates, “If we could give every individual the right amount of nourishment and exercise, not too little, not too much; we would have found the safest way to health.” Furthermore, Unani physicians provided cognitions regarding timing, modes and benefits of riyazat. Taken together, conclusive evidence exists that lack of riyazat is one of important causes of Amraz-e-Muzmin. In addition, riyazat primarily prevents, or delays chronic diseases, implying that chronic diseases need not be an inevitable outcome during life.
