Understanding Kameela's Importance In The Unani System Of Tibb: A Detailed Perspective

Abstract


Kameela or Kamala, a renowned Unani medicine, has been utilized by Unani physicians for centuries to effectively address Amraze Jildiya, commonly known as skin diseases. Its medicinal properties have been extensively documented in classical Unani texts. These perennial shrubs or small trees are widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions, typically found at altitudes below 1,000 m. The pharmacological activities of Kameela encompass a broad spectrum, owing to its diverse range of natural compounds. The compounds found in it are predominantly phenols, diterpenoids, steroids, flavonoids, cardenolides, triterpenoids, coumarins, isocoumarins, and various other substances, with a notable focus on phenols. Notably, bergenin, malotophilippinens, rottlerin, and isorottlerin have been successfully isolated, identified, and recognized for their intriguing biological activities. These activities encompass antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiviral, cytotoxicity, anti-inflammatory, immunoregulatory, and protein inhibition against cancer cells. Within the Unani system, Roghan Kameela and Zimad Jarb are well-established combination medicines employed for the treatment of jarb (scabies) and kharish (itching), demonstrating their time-tested efficacy and safety. The present comprehensive review highlights the significant value of Mallotus philippinensis as a rich source of medically important natural molecules, presenting compelling evidence for its potential future application within modern medicine.
