A Review on Ardhavbhedaka with Special Reference to Migraine

Abstract


Migraine is a recurrent headache disorder manifesting in attacks with the characteristics of unilateral location, pulsating quality, moderate or severe intensity, and association with nausea, photophobia and phonophobia. In Ayurveda, Migraine can be considered under the Shiroroga named Ardhavbhedaka. Migraine is not a life threatening disease, but it can have a devastating and disruptive effect on normal living. It has been termed the seventh disabler due to its considerable impact on the quality of life of patient. The treatments available in modern science have considerable benefits but have their own limitations such as drug side effects, drug dependency, and relapse of headache. Hence in this study an attempt is made to enlighten the correlation of Ardhavbhedaka and migraine and finding alternative treatment options for migraine in Ayurveda.
