Prevalence of Sickle Cell Disorder in Rural Vyara of Gujarat

Abstract


Sickle cell anaemias are the most common hereditary disorders in India and pose a major health problem. The study was conducted in the population of Vyara city, taluka Vyara, district Tapi of Gujarat state, India, from July 01, 2017 to September 31, 2017. The screening was done by dithionate turbidity test. The selected people were determined, and their result was established by Hb electrophoresis. The present study was carried in 268 patients for screening of for sickle cell trait and sickle cell anaemia. The prevalence of sickle cell was higher in female 75 (65.21%) as compared to male 40 (34.7%). The prevalence of sickle cell disorder was found in Gamit (55.6%), Chaudhari (34.7%), Vasava (1.7%), Varli (1.7%), Lakhani (1.7%), Bariya (0.86%), Kolwadiya (0.86%), Desai (0.865), Rathod (0.86%), and Salve (0.86%). The present study suggests that the sickle cell disorders are present in scheduled castes, tribals and few communities of other backward classes (OBC), and not found in so-called higher castes.
