Barriers Towards Implementation of Caring, Respectful and Compassionate Healthcare Practice in Tigray Regional State, Ethiopia: A Qualitative Study
Abstract
Background: Patient-centered care is a type of care that is respectful, responsive to the preferences and values of patients. Though policy-makers increasingly adopt systems to enhance person-centred care for patient’s empowerment and improvement of the quality of care, the barriers to implement must be identified continuously so as to give a timely solution. Objective: The aim of this study was to explore barriers towards implementation of caring, respectful and compassionate healthcare practice in Tigray Regional state, Ethiopia. Methodology: A cross-sectional study design with a qualitative approach was used and in-depth interviews were held with 40 health professionals working in health facilities of the Tigray region and selected purposively from each health facility. An unstructured in-depth interview guide was used to collect the data and analysed using content analysis. Results: The main barriers towards implementation of caring, respectful and compassionate healthcare practice in Tigray Regional state are poor professional knowledge, attitude and practice of health professionals, Weak leadership system, the policy of education and curricula, community misperception and professional misconduct. Conclusion: There are several challenges that hamper caring, respectful and compassionate healthcare practice in Tigray Regional state. Hence, interventions like training and curriculum revision are advised to be considered to improve the CRC implementation in the region.
