A Review of the Use of Direct Oral Anticoagulants for Treating Venous Thromboembolism in Patients with Cancer

Abstract

Venous thromboembolism is a common complication in patients with cancer. Treatment guidelines have long recommended low molecular weight heparin as the first-line therapy. There is a growing body of literature regarding direct oral anticoagulants in treating venous thromboembolism in these patients. The data regarding the use of direct oral anticoagulants in this population is reviewed as are the most current guidelines from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network.
