Concept of Rhinosinusitis in the Unani Medicine: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a common multifactorial inflammatory disease of the mucosal lining of nose and paranasal sinuses. It is a frequently occurring disease, with significant impact on quality of life and health care spending, and economic impact in terms of absenteeism and productivity. The signs and symptoms of Warm-e-Tajaweef Anaf Muzmin (Chronic rhinosinusitis) are consistent with Nazla barid which depend on the involvement of paranasal sinuses. About 5–15% of the worldwide population is affected with chronic rhinosinusitis. It has been estimated in a survey by The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) that 134 million Indians suffer from chronic sinusitis. Among Indians, this disease is more widespread than diabetes, asthma or coronary heart disease and one in eight Indians suffer from chronic sinusitis. Warm-e-tajaweef anaf muzmin (Nazla barid) occurs as a result of the involvement of various factors which affects the individual either externally (Baroodat kharji) while as intrinsic (Baroodat mizaji) and/or both. Traditionally, herbal medicines have been used for generations to treat bacterial ARS, and there has been an increasing interest in herbal medicine both in the USA and in Europe. The basic principle of management (Usool-e-ilaj) of Waram-e-Tajaweef Anaf Muzmin may be Izale-sabab (Elimination of cause), Tadeel-e-madda (Correction of consistency of morbid matter), Tadeel-e-mizaj (Correction of temperament), Tadabeer and Muqawwiyate dimagh wa meda.
