Ayurvedic Review of Thalessemia Major and Correlate it as a Beejadushtijanya Pandu

Raina Anand Khimsurya

Abstract

Hemoglobin disorders are a significant public health issue globally, especially in developing countries, which often have limited resources to address this problem. . Thalassemia is a genetic disorder that affects red blood cells, and it is inherited through a single gene in an autosomal recessive pattern. In Ayureda there is no direct description of thalassemia but directives regarding Panduroga are found in Rigveda and Atharvaveda. Ancient Indian literatures such as Mahabharata, Valmiki Ramayana, Yogavasishtha, Garudapurana and Agnipurana contain literary descriptions of Panduroga. Detailed descriptions of Panduroga are given in all Ayurvedic literature. In Ayurveda, Aachaarya Charaka described Beejadushtijanya Vikaara. In his explanation, he stated that if certain biological humors (Doshas) disrupt specific seeds (Beeja) or seed components (Beejabhaaga), particular components (Avayava) would be considered altered (Vikrita). So Thalassemia is Beejadushtijanya Vikaara. It can also be called Sahaja or Aadibalapravritta Vikaara.
