Shabiya Sultana, Abdul Haseeb Ansari, Shahnawaz .

Abstract

Buthūr-i-labaniyya (Acne vulgaris) is one of the commonest skin diseases treated by the dermatologists. Buthūr-i-labaniyya are small eruptions on nose and cheeks which look like condensed drops of milk, so they are named as Buthūr-i-labaniyya (milky eruptions). It is found that 70% of the population has some clinically apparent acne at various stages during adolescence. On squeezing, a cheesy material is expressed out. These eruptions are due to Mādda-i-ṣadīdiyya (suppurative material) which is disposed towards skin surface. In allopathy, so many drugs are available, but no drug is effective satisfactorily. Benzoyl peroxide has irritating and bleaching side effects, Tretinoin causes sun burn and topical retinoids are irritants. There is need for treatment of Acne vulgaris to cure it and its consequences without any side effects. In Unani system of medicine, many crude and compound formulations are available that can be administered orally and locally in the treatment of Acne vulgaris. These preparations are useful, effective, safe, economical and well tolerated. So there is need to explore the Unani concept of dermatosis.
