Palpitations (Khafaqan): Modern and Unani Medicine Perspectives

Abstract


Palpitation is a very common and sometimes frightening symptom and a regular clinical problem in general practice for frequent cardiology referrals. Although, described as an uncomfortable awareness of one’s own heartbeat, palpitations is a clinical entity with varied aetiology ranging from benign causes to serious arrhythmias. Unani system of medicine is an ancient science of health and healing. The modern equivalent term for palpitation in Unani medicine is Khafaqan. In Unani medicine, heart is one of the three fundamental organs of the body. Heart is considered as the chief of Aaza-e-Haywaniyya (vital organs) and palpitation (Khafaqan) is described as critical for heart ailments. Palpitations are a common reason for urgent care visits and are very common in general population. This paper aims at unfolding the basics of palpitation in Unani system of medicine and reviewing its correlation with modern medicine aspect.
