Vyayama (Exercise)—an Ayurvedic Viewpoint
Abstract
Vyayama (exercise) has been an imperative component of the Ayurvedic practice for many years. Ancient scholars have specified a lot prominence of it since Vyayama has many benefits on the mindset and body. Currently, people are suffering from various diseases such as obesity, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, joint diseases and diseases due to ageing etc. The reason of these diseases is established, that is, lack of work out. Exercise in appropriate manner enhances firmness, stamina in the body and increases aptitude to do occupation. It pacifies the three doshas and makes equilibrium when performed as per prakriti (constitution), vaya (age) and ritu (season). Vata prakriti desires less exercise, thus lighter activities such as walking are most excellent. Pitta prakriti requires moderate quantity of exercise such as swimming and Kapha prakriti requires extreme exercise, such as jogging and aerobics, to maintain equilibrium. According to season, if individual desires to amplify exercise, winter and spring are the pre-eminent. In summer climate, one requests to reduce physical exertion and reside out of the Sun. As per age, children have additional competence for exercise and adults have less; even though routine exercise is necessary at any age. Exercise improves the digestion, and if completed precisely liquefies impurity in the tissues. It increases immunity, eliminates fatigue, prevents premature aging, retards weight gain and consequently recovers one’s excellence of existence.
