Toxicological and Pharmacological Effect of Khadirarista in Animal Model

Abstract
The objective of this study is to investigate the toxicological and pharmacological aspects of the popular Ayurvedic preparation Khadirarista (KDR). Khadirarista was administered orally to male albino rat. After 46 days of treatment period, animals were fasted for 18 h after the last administration. Biochemical studies including; total protein, serum albumin, blood urea nitrogen, bilirubin, creatinine, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase were conducted. Triglyceride and creatinine levels were significantly (p = 0.001) decreased in the KDR group than in the corresponding control group. Bilirubin, urea, sGPT, sGOT, ALT contents were also significantly (p = 0.001) decreased in KDR group. Lowering of triglyceride is particularly beneficial in the condition where triglyceride is a burden. Decreased level of liver enzymes (sGPT, sGOT and ALP) and bilirubin content might be caused by KDR-induced poor liver function. Further studies are needed to be conducted to reach a concrete decision about its application in human beings.
