A Comparative Study of Artava Chakra with Menstrual Cycle

Abstract

Ayurveda is Science of Life and its main aim is to maintain Healthy status of Healthy Living Being, i.e., Prevention of Disease and Treatment of Disease. As per Ayurvedic Science, Sharir is made up of dosha, dhatu and mala. Among the Sapta dhatus, Rasa dhatu has Artava and Stanya as Updhatu. Various terms are used in classic to denote menstrual blood and ovum at different places, i.e., Artava, Raja, Pushpa, Lohita Shonita, Bija, etc. Ayurvedic classic texts has mentioned role of Doshas on menustration, i.e., like all other physiological processes menustration is also governed by three Doshas viz. Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Unlike to phases of Menustral Cycle, Ayurvedic acharyas has not explained Artava Chakra in to stages. But depending on avaialable references in samhitas, Artava Chakra, i.e., every month cycle can be divide intoin following stage: (1) Drustartava, i.e., menustral flow. (2) Rtukala, i.e., period of conception. (3) Yoni samvriyan. Therefore, this study were taken into consideration which has main objective to review menustration in different Ayurvedic classic texts, to compare and evaluate data available on menstruation.
