Abstract

Ayurveda is the science of life and its main aim is to maintain healthy status of healthy living being, i.e. prevention of disease and treatment of disease. In order to prevent the unmanifested diseases and to cure the manifested ones, an individual’s desire of happiness should follow the regimen prescribed in text of Ayurveda. As per Ayurvedic science, nidra is one among most essential factors responsible for a healthy life. It is one of the tryopstambha i.e., three basic supporting pillars on which the health of a person depends. Nidra is a very important regimen of day to day life, which if not taken properly can cause severe pathological manifestation, which will affect somatic, psychological and sexual health as well. The life style changes of recent era i.e., not following dincharya, ritucharya etc. have led to various disorders. Nidra plays an important role in all of them. This article lays emphasis on the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda about the importance of nidra i.e., physiological and clinical significance along with an attempt of critical review study of sleep. This article overviews and lights up the main study of nidra already given in different ayurvedic texts and comparing it with today’s era.
