Knowledge and Practice of the Senior Secondary School Teachers on Disaster Management In Earthquake

Abstract


Disaster reduction should begin in school that demands raising level of awareness among both students and teachers. The objective of the present study was to develop and evaluate the information booklet on Disaster Management in Earthquake for secondary school teachers after assessing their knowledge and practice on Disaster Management in earthquake The methodology adopted for this purpose was that an intervention pre-test post-test design was used among 60 teachers of the senior secondary school of West Delhi. A semi-structured validated knowledge and practice questionnaire was developed and utilized for the data collection. The post-test was administered on 8th day. A structured opinionnaire was used to gather opinion on acceptability and utility of the booklet. Data obtained were analyzed and interpreted in the light of objectives and hypothesis, using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The results obtained from the study revealed that the difference in the mean pre-test and post-test knowledge scores was statistically significant in all the areas. There was significant positive correlation between post-test knowledge and practice scores. The information booklet was found highly acceptable and usable by the senior secondary school teachers. They expressed the need to have a Hindi version of the booklet with all the senior secondary school teachers. It was concluded from the study that awareness about disaster risk and its management can be improved using information booklet among school teachers.
