Assessment of Comorbid Illness Among Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease at Selected Hospitals in Madurai

Rathi R. K., R. Revathi

Abstract

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a comprehensive term encompassing kidney damage or a sustained reduction in the glomerular filtration rate over a period of three months or longer. CKD is linked to a diminished quality of life, heightened healthcare costs, and premature mortality. The main objective of this study was to identify the comorbid illnesses among the patient with chronic kidney disease and to associate the comorbid illness with their selected demographic variables. This retrospective study focused on extracting the details of comorbid illnesses of the patient’s who got admitted and treated for chronic kidney disease from the medical records of selected hospitals in Madurai from the period September 2019 to May 2020. Convenient sampling technique was adapted to this study. Reviewed 160 medical records and extracted the details with the diagnosis of chornic kidney disease.Among 160 chronic kidney disease patients, 35(21.88%) were between the age group of 20-40, 77(48.13%) were between the age group of 40-60, 48(30%) were between the age group of 60-80. Among which 11(69.37%) were male and 49(30.62%) were female. 79(49.38%) of the patients were undergone dialysis and 1(0.62%) patient had receiving blood transfusion. majority of the participants 88(55%) were having hypertension, 12(7.5%) of the participants were suffering with diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease, 10(9.43%) were having renal calculi,3(1.88%) of them had urethral strictures and 2(1.25%) of them were suffering with having malignancies, epilepsy and epistaxis. There is a significant association between age, number of patients undergone dialysis and comorbid illness at p < 0.02 and p < 0.000002 level. This study suggests that the presence of comorbidities in individuals with chronic kidney disease can substantially elevate the likelihood of mortality, frequent hospital readmissions, prolonged hospital stays, and healthcare expenses. Consistently conducting health education and awareness initiatives for the general public on preventing chronic kidney disease and its related comorbid conditions can mitigate the risk faced by those with chronic kidney disease.
