Abstract

Ageing is a natural, irreversible and inevitable biological phenomenon. It is a process of gradual, progressive and generalized impairment of functions resulting in the loss of adaptive response to stress. According to the Unani concept, arthritis is a type of pain which occurs in joints of any part. In the classical Unani literature, the illness of joint pain is mentioned under the caption of “Wajaul Mafasil” which includes all types of arthritis. The term “Waja” means pain and “Mafasil” means joints; hence “Wajaul Mafasil” means pain in joints. As per age distribution, maximum subjects were found in between 61–70 years (47%). Sex distribution shows that out of total number of patient, 37.5% patients were female and 62.5% were male. Personal history distribution showed  that 26.7% patients of total 200 cases were tobacco chewers followed by smokers (20%) and alcoholics (16.7%). Orthopaedic conditions distribution shows, osteoarthritis (OA) knee 26.5% (53) was most prevalent followed by low backache (LBA) 24.5%, neck pain (19%), Gouty arthritis (15%) followed by rheumatoid arthritis (RA; 5.5%), frozen shoulder (4.5%), tennis elbow (2.5%) and others (2.5%). The study was done to find out the prevalence of orthopaedic conditions in senior citizens and to create awareness among them about different orthopaedic conditions, protection of which may enable normal ageing process.
