Abstract

Psoriasis is a chronic, non-infectious, inflammatory and an auto-immune disorder characterized by sharply demarcated erythematous plaques with mica like silvery scales. It occurs primarily on elbow, knee, and scalp and by chronic fluctuating course. It not only ruins the quality of life of afflicted individuals but also has substantial psychological and social impact on patient’s life, as the appearance of patient may be embarrassing. In Ayurveda, all skin diseases have been described under the umbrella of Kushtha. All Acharyas have described that all Kushtha have Tridoshik involvement. According to Acharya Charak, Ek-kushtha is due to vitiation of Vata and Kapha. Psoriasis' exact aetiology is not understood, but many precipitating factors such as genetic, nutritional, immunological, and psychological have been identified. On the basis of symptoms, it can be compared with psoriasis. It is spreading very rapidly because of unsuitable life-style changes such as dietary pattern, busy schedule and stress; so, there is a need to find out the treatment that can help in prevention and cure of the disease. There is no satisfactory treatment available for psoriasis. Ayurvedic approach in the disease is by pacifying the doshas, paying special attention to Vata-Kapha shamana.
