Management of Ardhavabhedaka (Migraine) with Nagara-Ksheera Nasya-Karma: A Case Report

Abstract

Ardhavabhedaka defined as ‘Ardha-Mastak-Vedana’, which is mentioned under the Shirorogas. It can be symptomatically correlated with migraine. Migraine is an episodic primary headache disorder. It is the sixth highest cause worldwide, of years lost due to disability (the Global Burden of Disease Study, 2013), with 11% of adults affected and more common in women usually by a factor of about 2:1 (WHO). Nasya Karma (Errhine therapy) is considered as the best therapeutic intervention in Shiro Rogas by all Acharyas. Nagara-Ksheera Nasya is mentioned by Acharya Chakradatta in context of Shiro Roga Chikitsa. Thus, an attempt has been made to assess the efficacy of Nagara-Ksheera Nasya in the management of Ardhavabhedaka (Migraine) in this case report. A 20 years old female patient suffering from the symptoms of migraine, i.e., headache, nausea, vomiting, vertigo, photophobia, phonophobia, ocular pain, blurring vision, heaviness of eyes, diplopia, irritability from one and half year, was treated with Nagara Ksheera Nasya Karma for 42 days (in 3-sittings, 7-days included in each sitting and 7 days interval between each sitting) and a follow-up was done after 1 month; considerable improvement was seen in the clinical features of migraine.
