A Comprehensive Review on Asava w.s.r. to Charaka Samhita

Ayurveda, the science of life, deals with huge use of herbs as a treatment tool to treat many ailments. Herbs can be used in many forms such as churna, vati, avaleha, swarasa, kwatha, taila, ghrita, asava-arishta, arka etc. Sandhanakalpana is one among them, which refers to self-generated alcohol generally called as asava-arishta. It can be considered as fermented herb extracts which has got specific properties such as sookshma, teekshna, vyavayi, vikasi etc. Asava-arishta formulations play an important role in removing vitiated doshas from sookshmasrotas. Here is an attempt to compile all sandhanakalpas mentioned in Charakasamhita with their specific indications.
