Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a joint disease that mostly affects cartilage. Cartilage is the slippery tissue that covers the ends of bones in a joint. Healthy cartilage allows bones to glide over each other. It also helps to absorb the shock of movement. In OA, the top layer of cartilage breaks down and wears away. This allows bones under the cartilage to rub together. The rubbing causes pain, swelling, and loss of motion of the joint.Cap Arthro which is a Unani polyherbal compound formulation was used with regimenal therapy. The aim of this study was to comprehend the effectiveness of the therapy in knee OA patients. The series of cases were studied in Shamim Ahmad Saeedi Unani speciality hospital for Waja-ul-Mufasil (Joint Pain), Funded by the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India from 07-10-12 to 04-11-2018. About 49520 patients were included in the study, 27988 (56.51%) were males, whereas 21532 (43.49%) were females. Primary outcome measures of study was to evaluate the efficacy of in patients suffering from OA of knee by assessing knee joint pain (VAS) and WOMAC pain subscale score. At baseline visit, the mean knee joint pain score assessed on VAS was 60±08.85. The mean knee joint pain score (VAS) reduced significantly from baseline to 28.14±07.60 at the 14th day. At baseline visit, the mean WOMAC combined score was 40.38±11.21, which was reduced significantly to 15.56±07.89 at the end of the study. Thus concludes efficacy of the Unani formulation in OA.
