Designing Cantilever Prosthesis: A Case Study

A critical edentulous situation that tests the ability of a prosthodontist includes simple edentulous situations like when a maxillary lateral incisor is missing. This is not because of difficulty to restore but the greater challenge is which prosthesis to select. Conventionally, cantilever fixed partial denture has been the choice in such situations. Advances in implant have, however affected the occurrence of such cases. However, patients where other treatment options are contraindicated, cantilever supported fixed partial denture is an excellent option, provided one has the knowledge and application of the dynamics of occlusion. This article provides an insight of two clinical situations — one where cantilever is given with additional rest and the other where cantilever prosthesis would suffice.
