Abstract

Flawless impression is the most critical of simplicities in indirect restorative dentistry. Pre-requisite for successful fixed partial denture is an accurate three dimensional facsimile of the prepared teeth. Knowledge of various impression techniques, nature and behavioral properties of the available impression materials is mandatory for a good impression. Today the techniques and materials exceed our needs in terms of accuracy and properties. Yet, a flawed and imperfect impression is not infrequent. The purpose of this article is to overview the various impression techniques used in fabrication of fixed prosthesis, the realization of pitfalls in impression making and development of awareness regarding the ideal usage of techniques and materials. This should help to develop an understanding for the key properties of materials and the strategies that can be incorporated into one’s practice for an accurate and detailed impression making.
