Abstract

Although clinicians have started using very refined and stabilized fixed orthodontic appliances.  The physical concepts that form the foundation of orthodontic mechanics are the key in understanding how orthodontic appliances work. The principles are not unique to orthodontics but are basic to the science of static mechanics. Biomechanics is the stud y of mechanics as it affects the biologic systems. It is the application of mechanics to the tooth movements due to orthodontic forces. Orthodontics is intimately concerned with the bewildering array of forces which continuously play on the teeth and bones from the earliest stages of orthodontic treatment. This article will help an orthodontist to understand the facts of force vectors and the combinations when two or more simultaneous forces are applied.
