Myoepithelial Cell – A Morphologic Diversity – A Review

Myoepithelials are found in sweat glands, mammary glands, lacrimal glands, and salivary glands. They are important components of salivary gland structure, aiding the expulsion of saliva from acinar lobules. However, we currently know very little about the cellular and molecular characteristics of myoepithelial cell precursors, as well as their possible use in the diagnosis of salivary gland lesions. Moreover, the nature of the signals involved in communication between luminal and basal myoepithelial cells is largely unknown. These unresolved questions provide a vast area for future investigation. Therefore, this article presents a review on myoepithelial cells physiology, morphogenesis and histology as there is a paucity of such studies in dental literature.
