Piezosurgery in Periodontics and Implantology: The Future Tool for Traditional Procedures?

Abstract

This review summarizes current knowledge and experience of piezosurgical device in periodontics and implantology which was developed in 1988. This device uses a modulated ultrasonic frequency that permits highly precise and safe cutting of hard tissue. The chief advantages of piezosurgery include decreased blood loss, soft tissue protection and less vibration and noise that increases comfort of the patient. The main indications in periodontics are supragingival and subgingival scaling and root planning, periodontal pocket lavage, crown lengthening, soft tissue debridement, resective surgeries, regenerative surgeries- to obtain autogenous grafts for treatment of periodontal intrabony defects,  sinus lift, bone graft harvesting, osteogenesis distraction, ridge expansion and inferior alveolar nerve decompression. In conclusion, piezoelectric devices are an innovative ultrasonic technique for safe and effective osteotomy or osteoplasty compared with traditional hard and soft tissue methods that use rotating instruments.
