Periodontal tissue regeneration has always been a challenge for the periodontists. Regeneration of lost tooth supporting structure by periodontitis is a primary goal of periodontal therapy. Platelet rich blood derivatives have been widely used in the field of dentistry. In recent years, platelet rich blood derivatives have gained more attention in periodontal regeneration. Platelet rich blood derivative which include platelet-rich plasma (PRP), platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), platelet-derived growth factors (PDGF), have potential to stimulate stem cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation which leads to improvement in wound healing and regeneration of the periodontal tissue. The following review has gathered all the currently available human studies, clinical studies, systematic reviews, randomized controlled clinical trials using PubMed electronic database up to and including 2018 highlighting the role of platelet-derived tissue engineered products in the field of periodontal regeneration. Although the results are encouraging from the previous studies, but further validation is still needed to identify the true potentials of platelet-derived tissue products.
Keywords: Periodontal regeneration, platelet rich blood derivatives, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)
