C-shaped Canal in Maxillary Second Molar: a Case Report

Abstract

Contemporary knowledge of various possible canal configurations is imperative for a positive outcome of endodontic therapy. Complete canal preparation is further based on the awareness about the possibilities of variations from normal canal configurations. A case is presented here with C-shaped canal configuration of maxillary second molar which has the rare occurrence of 3.8%. Although C-shaped canals are most frequently reported, in literature, in mandibular second molars, recently such types of canals are reported in various other teeth as well such as a maxillary first molar, maxillary premolars and mandibular premolars. The intricacy of C-shaped canal configuration provides a considerable challenge with respect to canal preparation, debridement and obturation and possibly the prognosis during the endodontic therapy. The anticipation of a C-shaped canal configuration before embarking on the endodontic treatment can augment effective management of the tooth, thus preventing irreparable damage to the tooth.
