Abstract
Introduction: The constriction of maxillary arch can be corrected in the stream of orthodontics by expansion. Expansion can be brought about by 2 methods, such as rapid palatal expansion (RPE) and slow maxillary expansion (SME). There is a newer method known as surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE). But the expansion is classified into various categories based on tissue born, bone born and tooth born; the classification will be described further in the article. There are devices to bring about expansion in mandible too. These expanders are responsible to correct transverse discrepancies in maxilla and mandible, which can be appreciated by clinical evaluation and radiographic evaluation. The expanders that are used can be of either removable type or fixed type. When expansion is brought about by the appliances in maxilla, there is triangular opening seen with the base between the central incisors; clinically evaluated by diastema formation. Conclusion: Both maxillary and mandibular arch constriction can be corrected by expansion. And expansion can be brought about by using various appliances. Even surgical intervention can be carried out in patients who have finished growth completion and have fused sutures in maxillary palate.
