A Study of the Masticatory Efficiency in Patients with Telescopic Crown Dentures

Abstract

The authors’ aim was to investigate the masticatory process in patients with telescopic crown dentures using an artificial test bite. The targets of the study were 65 patients, divided into two groups: a Control group and a Clinical group. The test bite sample used was Protab®, suitable for prosthetic dentitions. A sieve analysis was applied in determining the particles’ size after chewing and the particle-size distribution using a set of sieves (Sieve shakers from Cisa, Spain). The statistical analysis of results for each fraction was performed using SPSS Statistics software package for epidemiological and clinical research (V.17.00, August 2008). A significant correlation was established between the number of chewing movements and the chewing time (R=0.485, P˂0.05). The fraction size obtained using Protab® (1.294 mm) compared with the entire population of Bulgarian patients, who met the inclusion criteria of the group of patients with model-cast prosthesis, generated a 95% confidence interval for the fraction size of Protab® (1.266 mm - 1.322 mm). Conclusion: The masticatory efficiency in the study group proved quite similar to that of the control group.
