From 2D to 3D: An Evidence Based Review of 3D Printing in Dentistry

Additive manufacturing, the technology popularly known as “3D printing” is the process of making any 3 dimensional solid objects from a digital model. This technology has revolutionized the process of manufacturing and has enumerable applications in automotive, aerospace and defense industries. Recently it has found application in medicine and dentistry where customized prosthesis is desired for every patient. 3D printing is valuable aid in orthognathic surgery, implantology, prosthetics and even orthodontics. The newest advancement in the field if 3D printing is bioprinting; i.e. 3D printing human cells and tissues. The article briefly reviews the various applications and advancements of 3D printing in dentistry.
