Abstract

A Quantitative study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of planned teaching programme regarding tracheostomy care on knowledge among staff nurses in a selected hospital at Kollam District. The objectives of the study were to assess, knowledge of staff nurses regarding tracheostomy care, to evaluate effectiveness of planned teaching programme on knowledge of staff nurses regarding tracheostomy care, to find out the association between knowledge of staff nurses regarding tracheostomy care with selected demographic variables. Probability-Simple random sampling technique was used to select 50 staff nurses for study. The tools used for data collection were demographic data, structured knowledge questionnaire, and planned teaching programme. The mean post-test knowledge score knowledge score 27.3 with standard deviation 1.3 was significantly higher than the mean pre-test score 11.6 with standard deviation 3.8. The study showed there was improvement in knowledge of staff nurses after conducting planned teaching programme and thus planned teaching programme was statistically significant at 0.01 level (t = 27.11, p < 0.000). There was no significant association between knowledge of staff nurses with socio demographic variables except with area of clinical experience in past and present area of work. Hence the study suggested that planned teaching programme was effective in improving the knowledge of staff nurses regarding tracheostomy care.
