Abstract

Anaemia is the most important risk factor for under-nutrition and poor dietary intake of iron which results in major public health problem among the vulnerable age group of life cycles such as pregnant women, infants, young children and adolescents. As per WHO, if the prevalence of anaemia at community levels is more than 40%, it is considered a problem of high consequences. As per data of NFHS-IV level of prevalence of anaemia in vulnerable age group is still alarming health problem. Taking attention of ground realities, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare develop the National Iron Plus Initiative (NIPI) and launch this programme in 2013. NIPI is an intervention to look at Iron Deficiency Anaemia. NIPI is called as a novel approach in health care because under one roof of this programme all life stages like childhood, adolescents and women in reproductive age group who are not pregnant, lactating mothers are covered.
