Health-related Issues among Brick Kiln Workers: A Cross-Sectional Study from Bijainagar and Bandanwara Area, Ajmer, Rajasthan

Abstract

Brick kiln industry is an unorganised and seasonal industry in India. Brick workers live in unhygienic conditions. Brick kiln industry is a place full of hazards. Brick workers are directly and indirectly affected with hazards. A cross-sectional study was carried out in Bijainagar and Bandanwara area. This paper examined the socioeconomic status of workers, their living conditions, types of work, duration of work, job satisfaction, welfare facilities, reason of working in kiln, health status, and awareness among workers to identify the factors associated with safety of workers. Simple random sampling was used to select participants from each selected brick kiln. A total of 100 workers with at least one-year experience were selected for the study. The data were collected through face-to-face interview from structured questionnaire. The results revealed that maximum age group of workers were found in 26–35 years. Muscular pain and breathing problem were generally found among brick kiln workers. The working hours of workers were nearly 12 h. Their wages were distributed according to their activities in brick kiln. They have no health insurance, not aware about health. Poverty is the main reason to join brick kiln industry. Brick workers suffered from unhygienic living environment and unsafe work environment.
