Breast cancer represents significant problem of the world. Reactive nitrogen species of which nitric oxide (NO) is important constituent is a free radical gas which is synthesized by nitric oxide synthase (NOS).NO inhibits DNA synthesis and can damage DNA directly by deamination. In this study, NO level was studied in normal, pre- and postoperative cases of breast carcinoma. For this blood samples from 60 breast carcinoma cases were taken along with 30 normal healthy controls. There was significant increase in NO in preoperative cases when compared with normal healthy controls and postoperative cases. This proves increased oxidative stress in carcinoma. This increase in NO may be the cause of inactivation of glutathione peroxidase, which results in increase in glutathione in carcinoma cases. Therefore, steps should be taken to reduce NO in cancer cases which further help in reduction of glutathione.
Keywords: nitric oxide (NO), breast carcinoma, oxidative stress
