Abstract

Skeletal health is important to maintain quality life, as it is known that qualitative bone helps preventing untoward bone fractures because of a good level of bone marrow density (BMD), but due to several factors, like the ageing process the skeletal strength decreases from natural lowering of BMD, since ancient ages plants have served human beings as a natural source of treatment and therapies, among them many medicinal herbs have gained attention because of its wide use and less side effects. In this current scenario, plant research has increased throughout the world and lots of evidence shows the immense potential of medicinal plants of traditional system. Since the knowledge of fractures, extensive work has been done to accelerate the process of fracture healing till the date. Various scholars of different systems of medicine understood the gravity of fractures, the causes of delayed or non unions and tried to overcome them. Healing of fracture is a natural process, sometimes healing occurs without any external effort and sometimes fracture union does not occur because of improper mobilization, mineral deficiency, other diseases, old age, less blood supply to the fractured part. Ayurveda researchers described different medicines in different forms, including internal and topical, which are said to enhance fracture repair and can reduce the time of immobilization. In Ayurveda Asthishrunkhala (Cissus quadrangularis) is being used as a bone healer drug since many centuries, but very few and insufficient records are available which proves its efficacy on modern scientific parameters apart from this it also posses many therapeutic effect which includes antioxidant properties, anti osteoporotic properties, gastro protective activity, anti inflammatory activity, analgesic properties and antimicrobial activity. The present review study is focused on reported information related to its therapeutic activities.
