A narrative review on cardiovascular disease due to the role of deficiency of Vitamin D and its management

Asad Jamal Ansari, Alhamd Tanveer, Nishat Fatima

Abstract

Cardiovascular disease is the prevalent cause of morbidity and mortality in the world, affecting many millions of individuals every year. Atherosclerosis, a chronic inflammatory condition that involves different cell types, several cytokines and adhesion molecules, is the underlying cause of cardiovascular disease. Vitamin D plays a pivotal role in bone homeostasis and calcium metabolism. Though, current research has specified additional helpful effects of vitamin D on the cardiovascular system. Vitamin D shortage is connected with chronic inflammatory diseases, counting diabetes and obesity both being strong risk issues for cardiovascular diseases (CVD). CVD, counting myocardial infarction, coronary artery disease, cardiomyopathy, hypertrophy, cardiac fibrosis, stroke, aneurysm, heart failure, peripheral arterial disease, hypertension, and atherosclerosis, are chief reasons of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The objective of this study is to review vitamin D’s pathophysiology, describe its relationship with cardiovascular diseases based on the most recent publications, and highlight the results of vitamin D supplementation in the prevention of such causes.

Keywords

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD), Vitamin D, Coronary artery disease, Stroke and Vitamin D supplementation.
