Obstetric Risks and Complications for Pregnant Women with Epilepsy: A Review

Mudasir Maqbool, Irfat Ara, Mehrukh Zehravi, Imran Gani

Abstract

Although epilepsy is a prevalent neurological condition, pregnant women with epilepsy face additional problems. A woman's risk of preeclampsia/eclampsia increases if she has epilepsy, as do other obstetrical issues such as premature labour and delivery, foetal loss due to ectopic pregnancy, induced abortion, caesarean section, stillbirth, and low birth weight kids. Epileptic mothers' babies are particularly vulnerable to serious birth defects and long-term neurological problems. For pregnant women with epilepsy, this article's goal is to provide a brief assessment of the obstetric risks and difficulties they face.
