Evaluation of Awareness, Perception and Utilization Towards Emergency Contraceptive among Female Students in Private College at Bahir Dar, North West Ethiopia, 2014

Abstract


 

Emergency contraception refers to a group of birth control modalities that when used after an unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure within defined time limits can prevent an unwanted pregnancy. It used to prevent unintended pregnancies among adolescent girls. Evaluation of awareness, perception and utilization towards emergency contraceptive among female students is studied at Bahir Dar private colleges. An institution cross sectional study design was conducted among 616 female adolescents. The data was collected by using a structured and pre-tested questionnaire was also utilized. Study participants were selected by using simple random sampling technique. The e-data was entered in to EPInfo version 5.3 and export to SPSS version 16.00 for the analysis. The results were presented in tables, graphs and charts. The majority of the participants were from the age group of 15–44 years. Of all the study participants 64 (10.8%) had used emergency contraceptive while 527 (89.2%) not used emergency contraceptive. In binary logistic regression analysis, the residence and religions of the study units were associated factors affecting the utilization of emergency contraceptive while educational status and marital status have no any association with emergency contraceptive. This study looks into good awareness and attitude towards of emergency contraceptive and poor practice of emergency contraceptive. This study identified that the marital and educational status were the associated factors affecting attitude of emergency contraceptive and knowledge of the students respectively.
