Detection of Hepatitis B Virus Coinfection among HIV Infected Patients in District Bharatpur, Rajasthan

Abstract

Aim: To screen for the coinfection of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected patients.

Methods: Hundred consecutive HIV infected patients were screened for HBV (HBsAg) using commercially available ELISA kit. 

Results: HBV coinfection was detected in 5/100 (5%) HIV infected patients. Male gender predominance was observed (80%), (four males and one female) and the median age was 37 years (95%CI ± 3.6) (range 20–55 years). Coinfection was high in the 31–40 years age group. Conclusion: Since the principal routes for HIV transmission are similar to that followed by the hepatotropic viruses, as a consequence, infections with HBV are expected in HIV infected patients. Therefore, it would be advisable to screen for these viruses in all the HIV infected individuals and their sexual partners at the earliest.
