Fungicides demonstration to manage wheat yellow rust (Puccinia striiformis) and fusarium head blight (Fusarium graminearum Schwabe) diseases in Semen Ari woreda, Southern Ethiopia
Abstract
The experiment was conducted in Semen Ari district to demonstrate fungicides against wheat strip rust and fusarium head blight (FHB) diseases during 2018 and 2019Rex®Duo and Tilt (propiconazole) fungicides were applied to the variety Danda'a. There were three therapies employed, including no therapy. A single plot design contained all of the treatments. Fungicides showed greater efficiency against both illnesses than the unsprayed plot. In 2018, the percentage severity index for yellow/strip rust from the Tilt250EC, Rex®Duo, and control plots was recorded as 59.84%, 41.26%, and 100%, respectively. In 2019, the percentage severity index decreased to 38.33%, 26.26%, and 70% from Tilt, Rex®Duo, and control, respectively. The Percentage Severity Index of FHB was recorded as (41.5%, 46.6% and 62.8%) in Rex® Duo, Tilt250EC and untreated control plots in 2019 respectively In the 2018 and 2019 growing seasons, Rex® Duo reduced wheat yellow rust disease by 63% and 92 %, and tilted by 39% and 68 % compared to the untreated plot. By the years 2018 and 2019, the yield in the Rex® Duo treated plot enhanced by 69.67% and 39.14%, and in the Tilt treated plot by 67.43% and 31.03% compared to the control plot. Farmers liked Tilt as their second choice after Rex® Duo. The fungicide Rex® Duo had the largest net benefit, followed by Tilt, according to the cost-benefit analysis. Both fungicides effectively prevented the diseases.. Therefore, it is better to use Rex® Duo followed by Tilt 250EC* to control both diseases and improve wheat productivity.
