Phytochemical Characterization and Antimicrobial Activity of Cassia Alata Leaf Extract
Abstract
Aim: The aim of this study was screening for bioactive compounds with pharmaceutical properties from Cassia alata leaf extract. Methodology: The dried sample of Cassia alata leaf was powdered and extracted with ethanol using soxhlet apparatus. Antimicrobial activity of the leaf extract was checked against different clinical pathogens. Result and discussion: Thin layer chromatography (TLC) revealed the number of compounds present in the leaf extract. The results suggest that they possess antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aurous, Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli. The presence of tannins, saponins and tannic acid was confirmed. Conclusions: From the results it was concluded that Cassis senna was showing antimicrobial activity against different pathogens.
