Abstract

In contrast to many medical conditions whose discovery carries a specific date often associated with a particular investigator, iron deficiency is an ancient disorder that stretches to the dawn of human history. In recent years, Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a disease that has reached epidemic proportions affecting countries worldwide, when it commonly begins from denutrition. Iron deficiency produces microcytic hypochromic red cells and substantially depresses both the mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and the mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC). The peripheral blood reticulocyte counts are in the normal range, but it sometimes increases a little. The number of nucleated cell could rise slightly in the bone marrow examination. Total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) may be elevated while the level of the serum iron may be depressed. In this report, we diagnosed one 13-year-old female with severe anemia as having IDA by symptoms, physical examination and laboratory tests. Thus, she took the traditional Koryo medicine— Ginseng anti-cancer composite drug (GACCD). Approximately one month later after administration of GACCD, the blood examination and symptoms began to improve. Furthermore, she was sufficiently recovered to go to work after 45 days. Therefore, we considered that GACCD could be one of the potentially advantageous choices in case of IDA.
